To become an IAS Officer, you need to qualify the Union Public Service Commission Civil Services Exam (CSE). The exam itself is conducted as a means to recruit civil servants to one of the 25 services that comprise of the All India Services (IPA, IFS and IAS), Central Services (IRS, Railways, etc) and Group B services.
The Union Public Service Commission
(UPSC) is responsible for conducting examinations for recruitment into civil services. UPSC was established in 1952 under the Central government as an autonomous body to recruit staff for various Central government departments and posts in the Central government. It conducts the Civil Services Examination (CSE) for recruiting various grades in different services. The CSE has 593 different papers, of which as many as 199 (or 33%) of the papers are objective based. ISS Educational Services Pvt. Ltd. ISS is an Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI). ISSF is an initiative by ISS to provide research for and promote avenues to bring out quality research reports by researchers. ISS is the largest platform of Chartered Accountants and Research Institutes working in India.
The Civil Services Exam
Civil Services consists of six stages – Civil Services Examination, Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) (three stages), Civil Services Interview (CSI) and the Computer-Based Test (CBT). This test will be conducted in three stages. 2. The exam will be an online test consisting of 150 objective questions. Most of the questions will be multiple-choice questions and in addition, there will be statements and reasoning questions. It should ideally be a computer-based test with objective questions. The duration of the examination will be 90 minutes. 3. Each examination will have three sections – English Language, Quantitative Ability, and Reasoning Ability. The minimum marks to qualify in each section will be 35, 40 and 45 respectively. 4.
How to register for CSE
The Civil Services Examination will be conducted for the post of Junior Assessor (Group ‘A’ 1.9 lakh vacancies), Junior Magistrate (Group ‘B’ 362 vacancies), Deputy Director (Group ‘C’ 256 vacancies), Senior Hindi Pracharak (Group ‘D’ 18 vacancies) and Deputy Director (Group ‘D’ 171 vacancies). The registration for CSE has begun on May 19 and will continue till June 7. After that, the results will be announced on June 20. It is important to note that the online registration process for CSE will be closed on June 7. Candidates are advised to register before this date as it will be difficult to get the results once the window has been closed.
How to prepare for the exam
CSE is conducted annually, for which you are given a tentative date and time. From all available information, it appears that the last date for CSE 2019 has been set for 17 February 2019. After clearing the CSE, the shortlisting process will be started which would continue till the candidates are called for the interview. Only after clearing the interview round can you be considered for recruitment. Aspiring candidates can gain access to the official CSE Application forms through the official website. The applicant needs to provide the prescribed fee (only in a specified format) and, if all is in order, the form will be accepted and a printout can be downloaded. For IIMs and IITs, there are certain norms applicable during the application process.
How to choose between IAS, IFS and IPA
As one of the four qualifying competitive examinations, the IAS, IFS and IPA merit ranges from 70 to 150 marks, out of which a candidate is to get a minimum of 45 marks and maximum of 50. It is important to know that the first two parts of the civil services exam is a multiple choice question (MCQ) based paper, and that the last part of the examination is a short answer question (SQ) based paper.
